MINE REHABILITATION COMMUNITY CONSULTATIONS START TOMORROW

The Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry Mine Rehabilitation community consultations start tomorrow, 4 August, in Traralgon at the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre. Two sessions will be run at 2.00pm and 6:30pm.

More consultations will be conducted in Morwell on 5 August at Kernot Hall at 2.00pm and 6:30pm.

The purpose of the consultations is to talk with people about what they would like to see the land at the mines used for in the future. This could include using rehabilitated land for agriculture, conservation or tourism.

The Inquiry is conducting these consultations to give the community the opportunity to let the Inquiry know how they want to see mine rehabilitation take place in the valley.

“You don’t need to be an expert. We want to hear people’s ideas. We encourage people to come along and tell us what they want to see happen at the mines in the Latrobe Valley.” said Bernard Teague, chair of the Board.

Summaries of the community consultations will be posted on the Inquiry’s website after the conclusion of the consultations.

People can also send the Inquiry their ideas through a written submission. We encourage people to provide written submissions of all lengths, details and content that relate to the Terms of Reference. Written submissions regarding mine rehabilitation will be accepted up to 5.00pm on 17 August 2015.

Anyone wishing to register to attend a community consultation or requiring assistance with their written submission should call the Inquiry Secretariat on 1300 556 034.

Community consultations will also take place in the 17th and 18th of August in Moe, Morwell and Traralgon. These consultations will look at the long-term health and wellbeing of the Latrobe Valley community.

Further details about these consultations can be found on the Inquiry’s website hazelwoodinquiry.vic.gov.au and will be promoted within the Latrobe Valley in the coming weeks.

For more information about the Inquiry, community consultations and how to make a submission visit hazelwoodinquiry.vic.gov.au or call 1300 556 034.
