Today the Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry handed Volume I of its 2015/16 report to Her Excellency the Honourable Linda Dessau AM, Governor of Victoria, at Government House in Melbourne at 2.00pm.
The first volume of the report is the culmination of the Inquiry’s investigation into term of reference 11, which tasked the Inquiry with identifying options that could be undertaken by Alcoa of Australia, the mine’s operator, to decrease the risk of fire arising from or impacting the Anglesea Mine for the 2015/2016 summer season.
The Board of Inquiry made up of the Honourable Bernard Teague AO, Professor John Catford, and Mrs Anita Roper expressed their gratitude to the people of Anglesea and the Surf Coast for their hospitality and participation in the process.
‘Our work has been informed by community consultations, written submissions and testimony from Alcoa, government and emergency services, all of which has provided us a robust source of information to conduct our investigations’, said chairperson, Bernard Teague.
The Inquiry is continuing work into its other terms of reference relating to health and mine rehabilitation in the Latrobe Valley and will hand the Governor these volumes of its report in December and March respectively.
